Inside MSEA with Sean Johnson

See you in Annapolis for the 2024 General Assembly

This issue of ActionLine includes a summary of key initiatives that will be part of MSEA’s legislative program during the upcoming General Assembly session. There is a lot of power in having MSEA lobbyists working for you while you are working for students. But that power is best realized when your voice is part of the discussion, debate, deliberations, and decision-making.

Your experience during this dire educator shortage is what legislators need to hear. What would smaller classes or reduced workloads mean to your classroom and the learning experience for your students? The personal stories you are willing to share about second and third jobs are what help make the case in our fight for living wages and ending the contracting out of education jobs.

Your sharing about the importance of helping all students see themselves in books and other educational materials is necessary for us to protect honesty and accuracy in our libraries and throughout our public schools. And the promise of expanded pre-k, college and career opportunities, improved diversification of the teaching pipeline, and more of the goals in the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future needs your advice to make some implementation changes in the landmark law and to continue to voice support for its full funding.

If we are going to win for our students, our schools, our state, and our union, we need you. Come join a lobby day or lobby night with your colleagues or with community partners, including parents and students. Our professional team will make sure you are prepared for your visit with legislators. You know how to do the rest—tell your story and educate them. Remind legislators of the real-life impact of their decisions. You can do that with your voice. You can do that by showing up. You can do that by advocating for yourself and for others. I can’t wait to see you in Annapolis!
